iGaming Ontario published its Q2 2026 market report on 10 June, and for the first time since the regulated market opened in April 2022, quarter-over-quarter GGR growth came in under 3%. The headline number — C$2.1B in gross gaming revenue across 49 operators and 84 sites — is healthy. The deceleration is the story.

Operator concentration is tightening

The top five operators now control 71% of GGR (up from 64% a year ago). DraftKings, FanDuel, Bet365, BetMGM, and Rivalry combine to define the market; everyone else fights for the remaining 29%. For mid-tier brands without a US sportsbook funnel, the unit economics in Ontario have stopped working.

The crypto gap

Ontario does not licence crypto-deposit casinos. AGCO's registration framework requires fiat rails through a Canadian bank, full stop. That has not stopped Ontario players from finding crypto-first offshore brands — Alexa rank data shows Canadian traffic to Stake, BC.Game, and Roobet up 22% year-over-year. The provincial regulator's position has shifted from "we'll enforce" in 2024 to "we're monitoring the harm signal" in the latest stakeholder note. That's a meaningful softening, and it's being read by other provinces.

Alberta and British Columbia are watching

Alberta's iGaming Act passed second reading on 4 June and is expected to mirror Ontario's framework with one key difference: the consultation draft explicitly leaves the door open to stablecoin deposits via a regulated custodian. If that holds in the final bill, Alberta becomes the first North American jurisdiction with a regulated crypto-casino pathway. British Columbia's BCLC has commissioned a parallel feasibility study due in Q4.

What it means for players

For Ontario residents on regulated sites, expect more aggressive retention promos in H2 as mid-tier operators fight churn. For Canadian players considering offshore crypto brands, the practical advice is unchanged: read our payout-speed guide first, because withdrawal friction is where offshore brands separate themselves. The crypto-casinos pathway walks through the trade-offs versus a regulated AGCO sportsbook.

The forward signal

Maturity in regulated markets historically pushes two things: M&A among mid-tier operators, and political pressure to expand the product perimeter (live dealer variants, prediction markets, peer-to-peer). Watch the AGCO's autumn rulebook consultation for the latter.
